Teacher wins £248k in unfair dismissal over pregnant pupil

In Pearson v Greenwood Academies Trust (Case No: 3311389/2023), an employment tribunal (ET) has ordered a school trust to pay £248,184 to a teacher it fired after she failed to report concerns about a pregnant student, ruling that the trust was shifting blame for an institutional failure. The ET ruled that Greenwood Academies Trust in northern England must compensate Mary-Ann Pearson for firing her over concerns she didn’t flag that a student was sexually abused and became pregnant, because none of the staff were aware of what was happening. Pearson had worked as a PE teacher for 18 years and raised concerns in the past about a pregnant student so she was clearly aware of her duties. The trust had also failed to explain why a teacher with a good record of reporting concerns would ‘one day just stop doing so, especially after such a long and unblemished career history’.
